The Unveiling

Kangaroo Ground Cemetery Established in 1851

New Development Commencing Late 2024

The Kangaroo Ground Public Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in greater metropolitan Melbourne and is known for its beauty and as a tranquil resting place amongst nature.

Several decades ago, with an eye to the future the Kangaroo Ground Cemetery Trust acquired a parcel of crown land bordering Eltham – Yarra Glen Road and Cemetery Road adjacent to the existing cemetery. Due to its shape, this land is referred to as the ‘Triangle’. The acquisition anticipated the future demand for cemetery services in Kangaroo Ground and the surrounding areas.

The Triangle’s elevated position has beautiful views over the surrounding farmland and back towards Kangaroo Ground.

The Masterplan

In 2022, following years of planning, the Trust commissioned well-known and highly respected local landscape designer Robert Boyle to develop a Masterplan for the development of the Triangle. Robert’s work is sometimes compared to famous Australian designers like Gordon Ford and Edna Walling, and he has extensive experience designing cemeteries.

The brief was to blend the theme of the existing cemetery together with the practical requirements of a modern cemetery. It also considered the prominent location on Eltham-Yarra Glen Road and the impact a cemetery would have to residents and passers-by.

The Masterplan Robert has developed envisages a beautiful place for families to inter their loved ones and return to visit. The landscape welcomes all communities and cultures and recognises the trend towards cremation. While the cemetery’s primary purpose is to provide a resting place for our loved ones, the Trust believes it will be an asset to the community and a place to absorb the beauty and tranquillity of the surrounds.

The development will commence in late 2024 with the initial earthworks, including driveways, paths, fencing, and the planting of trees.
