About

Established in 1851

Located on the rural fringe of Melbourne, the Kangaroo Ground Public Cemetery lies on the lower north-eastern slopes of Tower Hill, once the hunting ground of the Wurundjeri people.

Small and intimate, it records the rich history of a community’s settlement in the years since 1851.

Our grounds have curated garden areas that blend with the surrounding rural and traditional native fauna and flora of Kangaroo Ground, creating a natural and peaceful setting.

The Cemetery is administered by a Trust drawn from members of the local community. The Trust’s responsibility is to continue development in keeping with the Cemetery’s unique environment. This means that there are some limitations on the height, size and type of monument, as well as restrictions on additions to grass and ashes plots. These are more fully explained under each category here.

Kangaroo Ground Public Cemetery has a published history of the cemetery. ‘Tread Softly, You Tread on Dreams’ written by Mr Mick Woiwod, is available from the cemetery, by arrangement.

Mick Woiwod, Mike Pelling and Diana Bassett-Smith talk about the history of  their families and their connection to Kangaroo Ground and surrounds here. It is fascinating reading, a lot of which can be found in Mick Woiwod’s book “Kangaroo Ground The Highland Taken”.  Thank you to Jan and David Sharpe for providing the link to a Kangaroo Ground Cemetery Tour which took place in 2013.
